In der Neuauflage der gleichnamigen TV-Serie steht der 12-jährige Dean Williams (Elisha Williams) im Mittelpunkt, der mit seiner Familie in den unruhigen 1960er Jahren in Montgomery, Alabama lebt. Aus der Gegenwart erzählt Dean (jetzt: Don Cheadle) über seine damaligen Erlebnisse, die trotz allem ‚magische Jahre‘ waren. Und wie jeder Jugendliche macht der heranwachsende Junge wichtige Erfahrungen in verschiedenen Bereichen im Leben: Dean verliebt sich, hat Probleme in der Schule und ärgert sich mitunter über seine Familienmitglieder. Zudem ist es für afro-amerikanische Bürger in den Südstaaten in den großen sozialen Umbrüchen dieser Zeit nicht immer einfach – der alltägliche Rassismus, dem sie ausgesetzt sind, wirkt sich auch auf das Leben der Familie Williams aus.
