Het originele scenario was van Helmut Kissel en was deels gebaseerd op zijn eigen ervaringen als lid van de Hitlerjugend. De scripts die uiteindelijk werden opgenomen, zijn echter geschreven door Robert Muller. Helmut Kissel leidde als directeur van het project, maar werd binnen de eerste paar weken vervangen door Bernd Fischerauer toen de opnames begonnen. De opnames vonden plaats op locatie in Baden-Baden, West-Duitsland, de eerste vier weken in augustus 1980 en de rest van de productie werd voltooid tussen januari en maart 1981. Elke scène werd zowel in het Engels als in het Duits opgenomen en resulteerde in twee versies van de film. De postproductie van de Duitse versie werd voltooid in het voorjaar van 1982. Hij ging in première op de West-Duitse televisie in juli 1982 en de Amerikaanse versie ging in première in november 1982.
