Aynı gün, aynı hastanede dünyaya gelen iki bebek, yatak sayısının azlığından dolayı yan yana yatırılırlar. Ailelerinin "doğar doğmaz birbirlerini buldular" sözü üzerine beşik kertmesi yapılan bebekler, isimlerini de efsane aşıklar Leylâ ve Mecnun'dan alırlar. Aradan 25 yıl geçer. Bir sabah ailesi Mecnun'a durumu anlatır ve Leyla'yı istemeye giderler. Mecnun başta bu durumdan rahatsızlık duysa da Leyla'yı görür görmez aşık olur. Onu etkilemek için ne yapacağını bilemeyen Mecnun, bir gece rüyasında aksakallı dedeyi görür. Aksakallı dedenin rüyalarından çıkıp Mecnun'la beraber yaşamaya başlamasıyla da işler karışır.
